    • Shiva Asar B'Tammuz [Judaism] - A fast day beginign with the first light, lamenting the invasion of Jeruslaem by the Romans in the 1st century. Start of a three week period in which celebrations are not allowd to take place.

    • Birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama [Tibetan Buddhism] - The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was born on July 6, 1935.

    • Martyrdom of the Bab [Baha'i] - Memorializes the death of Bab in 1850.

    • Saint Benedict Day [Catholicism] - A day of mass and service in honor of St. Benedict who founded a monastery in the eighth century and was the founder of the Benedict Order.

    • Obon [Buddhism] - The beginning of a 15 day period during which the living are visited by their deceased family. It is celebrated by offering food to the ghosts and visiting the cemeteries.

    • Dharma Day [Buddhism] - Commemorates Buddha's first discourse following his Enlightenment. The term Dharma refers to the path of enlightment and truth. During this day gratitude is expressed to the Buddha as well as other teachers for the knowledge they have shared.

    • * Saint Elias Day [Orthodox Christianity] - Marks the day that Elias, or Elijah, the Hebrew Prophet, acended into heaven in a chariot of fire.

    • Tisha B'av [Judaism] - A major fast day lamenting the destruction of the First and Second Temples in ancient times.

    • Saint James Day [Catholism] - Commemorates James who was martyred in 44 C.E. He was one of the first apostles of Jesus Christ.

    • Oh-harai-taisai [Shintoism] - A time of purification from sins and offenses committed in the first half of the year. People pass through woven reeds at the entrance to the shrines as a symbol of inner purification.
